7th Issue January 2013
2013 has arrived with a bang and January is a great time to set your health goals for the new year. It’s time to detox and cleanse the system and to optimise your health by taking the correct supplements and eating as well as you can. It is also a good time to sort out any little health niggles that you may have decided to just “live with” - often minor changes to diet and supplementation can help alleviate these.
January is also the time to support and nurture the digestive system and liver after any indulgences over the festive season.
To welcome you all to the new year I am offering a 5% discount on all product purchases until the end of January.
I have also started writing articles for Natural Medicine magazine again so keep an eye out for those. The article on Omega 3 fatty acids was in the November 2012 Issue and plenty more will be following this year.
Did you know….Brazil nuts are probably the richest dietary source of selenium. Just 6-8 Brazil nuts supplies us with around 540 mcg of selenium (close to 10 times the recommended intake).
Selenium is one of the minerals that has been most affected by farming methods and soil depletion. Levels have been shown to have dropped by up around 50% in certain areas over the last 100 years or so.
Selenium is a wonderful and very important nutrient that acts as an antioxidant in the body. It is important for fertility, growth, thyroid, heart and liver health, as well as for healthy skin and hair amongst other things.
Eat 2 Brazil nuts per day to optimize your selenium intake.
FUN IN THE KITCHEN:
My favourite recipe of the month:
Easy green smoothie:
This recipe is great as a breakfast drink and is a quick and easy replacement for a green juice – plus you get the benefit of the fibre as well! It is a very light smoothie as it doesn’t contain any nut or seed milks or oils and if you have a powerful blender it turns out more like a juice!
· 1 lemon
· 1 banana
· Half a pineapple
· 1-2 cups of water (depending on your preference)
· 1-2 handfuls of baby spinach or other greens (organic please J)
· 1-2 Tablespoons of either Green Shake (Superfoods) or Green Power (The Real Thing)
Blend and enjoy!
Serves at least 2!
